The Simrad FS70 is a third wire trawl sonar for efficient monitoring of the net opening and the fishing conditions.

Simrad’s new trawl sonar platform combines “the best of two worlds”. It communicates with the vessel by means of a third wire system, and with wireless sensors mounted on the trawl by means of hydroacoustic links.

The new Simrad FS70 trawl sonar provides the “full picture”. It uses the well proven and reliable FS third wire system to establish communication between the submerged sonar head located behind the headrope and the vessel. Simultanously, the submerged unit communicates with a number of PI or FA sensors by means of hydroacoustic links. The unit even includes a 200 kHz echo sounder.

The visual presentation provided to you on the bridge gives you a clear picture of the trawl opening, as well as information from the sensors. This sophisticated solution allows you full control of any type of fishery, and by means of the information you will be able to increase the quality of the catch and your efficiency at sea.

Application

With the Simrad FS70 the rugged FS70 Trawl Unit is placed behind the headrope. The Trawl Unit contains the Sonar Head, a 200 kHz echo sounder, and the communication circuitry required to receive data from the wireless sensors.

Other wireless sensors are then placed on the trawl to suit your requirements. These report their data to the Trawl Unit, or to a PI system on the bridge.

Wireless sensors

The Simrad FS70 Trawl sonar system will communicate Simrad’s latest range of PI sensors. However, if you still use the successful FA Catch sensor, it will communicate with those too.

40 kHz FS70 System

The 40 kHz Simrad FS70 system will communicate with the latest range of Simrad’s PI Catch sensors. It will also communicate with the other PI sensors operating on the same frequency.

Current sensor support

With the current software and hardware functionality provided, the 40 kHz FS70 Trawl Unit can communicate with maximum six sensors (PI or FA).

Upgrading the FS70

If you have a lot of FA sensors, you may not wish to throw these over board. You can then purchase a 70 kHz FS70 system, and use your trusted FA sensors until they simply break apart (which may take a while..!). If necessary, you can add PI Catch sensors.

If you later wish to use the other PI sensors, you can upgrade your FS70 from a 70 kHz to a 40 kHz system. It is then an easy task to re-program any PI Catch sensors you may have. Once upgraded, you can add other PI sensors to monitor your trawl, such as the PI Spread, PI Temperature or PI Rip.

Simrad PI50 is the perfect backup system!

By installing a Simrad PI50 cabinet on the bridge and an extra hydrophone under the hull, you have a complete back-up system for the wireless sensors you already use on your FS70 system.

It is an easy task to receive trawl height, catch and depth information from the wireless sensors by adding only a few components to your existing setup.

The only sensor which demands that you make a choice is the PI Spread. This sensor must either point towards aft to transmit its information to the FS70 Trawl unit, or forward to send it to the PI hydrophone. Most users with both systems installed add a second adapter to each trawl door. That allows them to install the sensors any which way suitable for the job at hand, or even a double set of PI Spread sensors.

All the data from the wireless sensors can also be received by this additional PI system. This allows for an even more reliable instrument setup, as a failure to the FS70 will not leave you helpless, but still in control. You can even add additional sensors to the trawl and read these on the PI system, while the “main” sensors are handled by the Simrad FS70.

 

PI50

This this capture (from a simulated environment) shows the Simrad PI50 set up to work with a set of sensors: Depth, Spread, Height, Temperature and a Geometry set. Large and clear digits provide you with an instant feedback from the gear. As an additional feature, you can open any number of graphs to view the recent movements of selected sensors.
